Each year Mittagundi Outdoor Education Centre has unique opportunities for people join our team as leaders and have the experience of a life time.

It is rare chance to be a valued part of a professional team delivering unique opportunities for young people on our classic outdoor programs. The atmosphere at Mittagundi is simple, honest and happy. For young people there are no watches, no timetables and no money. Instead there is an chance to live and work together in an environment where people matter more than anything else. Leaders are an active part in running this unique pioneer style property and organisation alongside young people.

Mittagundi Wine Bottling Fundraiser

Every year the wonderful Pizzini Family winery donate some fabulous wine for us to sell to our supporters. This is one of our major fundraisers and helps us to keep Mittagundi operating. Don't miss this opportunity to buy quality wine and feel great about it!

It takes a few hands to help pack all the wine so if you are going to be around Wangaratta on the Saturday, 17th of September feel free to come to the wine bottling. A light BBQ lunch and sampling provided from 1pm.

A Message from the Incoming Director

Passing the reins from Jac to Toby, who filled the role of acting director, and then onto myself has left me working at a truly remarkable place.

After being introduced to the entire crew and council at a successful hop, I am looking forward to spending the rest of winter on site.

There are well-founded staff and volunteers, a supportive council, friends of Mittagundi group, sponsors, and great rural locals that have all been so supportive in me moving into this position and keeping Mittagundi, such a special place.

I have been learning the ways of the pioneer lifestyle that so many of you know too well, and am loving it, and for those of you that don’t know what I’m rambling about your welcome to come and experience Mittagundi for what, a truly remarkable place, it is.

The HOP!!

Come along for an awesome night full of fun filled dancing, laughing, and catching up with the Mitta crew.

With the convenient location of the Collingwood children's farm, and public transport only ten minutes walk away, what excuse do you have not to go?

For those of you who are unfamiliar with the hop, it is a Wollangarra and Mittagundi fundraiser/bushdance. The night features several live bands and some line dancing tutorials that are great to get into.

Remember to rug up nice and warm as the barn is often rather breezy, the dress code is clothes that allow you to dance and stay warm and party the night away. Just any old pair of grubby jeans and/or ballroom gowns will do. Clothes are optional, shoes are a must!

There is a small entrance fee of $10 full fare and $8 for the young folk.

There will be food and drinks to buy at the venue.
There will be a bar there and alcohol such as with Wine and Beer, but obviously that is strictly for +18s.

The bands start at 6.30 with the Eyal & the Skeleton Crew, then Velvet Cake Gypsies, followed by The Mittagundi Crew, Tully Sumner, and finishing with Andy Umbers & Friends with The Coconut Rebellion finishing the night off. Be sure to get there early, grab a feed, and be ready to get into it at 6.30.

Be sure to INVITE YOUR FRIENDS! That said, don't go crazy and be responsible.

We need some awesome people to volunteer to man the door and other assorted jobs throughout the night. What better way to get into it and to own the event than to help with the running of it?

Sad News - Jac's Resignation Letter.

To the Mittagundi Community,

It's with a heavy heart that I'm letting you know that I'm resigning from the role of director of Mittagundi. In the past months I've had the most challenging moments of my personal life with my father dying after a short and traumatic illness followed by my grandma's death. I find that I can no longer give everything I want to my role at Mittagundi.

The last 18 months at Mittagundi have been the most incredible experience, so perfectly challenging and so rich and meaningful. It's been such an incredible place to work and to live in the stunning and raw Glen Valley. I feel very proud of all I have been able to accomplish with an incredible community in such a short space of time. A deep thank you all for your support for both myself and Mittagundi.

I'd like to specially thank the amazing council that is often behind the scenes and two incredible leader teams, especially for all the care and support since November. To work hard with people of such calibre and commitment to young people and 'something small' has been a great inspiration.

Mittagundi has always been about rising to the challenge and currently we have quite a few happening at once! We've always survived because of the support and goodwill that comes from our community and at this moment we need your support more than ever.
Recent events with Jac's resignation due to personal circumstances, lower program numbers and greater compliance costs has led us to be in a pretty tough position.

So, here's how you can help:

Help us find a new Director or two.
Historically nearly all Directors have heard about the job from the extensive Mittagundi grapevine. If you know any one who fits the bill please let them know about the opportunity.

Spread the word in the Outdoor Ed Community
To help us get through the Director changeover we're going to need some Sessional Outdoor Ed Staff to help our team. We have an opportunity for a Sessional Winter Leader for 3 months and several spots for shorter terms for both Students and Outdoor Ed qualified staff.

Help us to fill programs

Director(s) of Mittagundi

Mittagundi is currently seeking a Director(s) for 2011 to 2013.

The Director(s) role is immensely challenging and rewarding and offers a truly unique lifestyle and the opportunity to facilitate life changing courses for young participants (14 to 18yo).

You’re responsible for a overseeing the whole operation. You’ll get to live in one of the most beautiful parts of Victoria. Past directors have commented on how much the role has changed their lives and the influential experiences that they encountered during their time at Mittagundi.

The position draws on a range of skills: team management - including training and recruitment, education, outdoor (hiking, group leading, rafting, etc), practical (milking cows!) with the responsibility of running a small successful non-profit organisation.

As a Director you will have access to training, resources and support to help you grow with the position. Interested yourself or know someone who is?

Winter Sessional Outdoor Leader

We’re looking for an experienced Outdoor Leader to join our team for our Winter Programs. The position runs from early July to Mid September (10 weeks). It involves leading groups of 20 young people into the Alpine areas around Mittagundi and also facilitating the Mittagundi experience at the property.
Mittagundi provides a great salary package including all your food and board (including many living expenses), intensive training and skills development that continues for the whole time your here, and a cash component. Vocational Placements

We love hosting Vocational Placement students from various fields (especially Outdoor Ed). A placement is a great opportunitiy to gain experience and work alongside young people and professional outdoor leaders on one of Victoria’s longest running Outdoor Programs.

Mittagundi Team 2011 - two places still available

Mittagundi is excited to announce our great team for this coming year. We welcome on board Toby Floyer as our skilled program manager,
Colleen Adams as our fantastic business manager (both new exciting roles for Mittagundi) and three excellent leaders with Jane Orme, Bec Bartlett and Becca Wade. We wish them all the best for this coming year.

Outdoor education experience a plus but not necessary - new option to undertake a cert 3 in outdoor recreation with Mittagundi as part of the great training package for this coming year.

'Pioneer Skills' Open Weekend and Glen Valley Bushdance

Friday 14th to 16th of January 2011

Come away the mountains for the annual open weekend to celebrate and support Mittagundi with friends and family.

Mittagundi is located in the picturesque Glen Valley by the Mitta Mitta River, 50km’s north of Omeo along the Omeo highway and 60km’s south of Mitta Mitta. Look out for the post and rail fence and a bright red mail box next to the big river bridge.

Sessional Outdoor Leader Positions

We are offering three sessional terms as well for leaders with outdoor education/recreation qualifications. These positions are between 3 and 4 months:
Autumn from the start of Feburary to the end of May;
Winter from the start of June to end of August,
Spring from the start of September to end of November

Pioneer Skills - 14th to the 16th of January 2011

Once a year we invite the entire Mittagundi community to come and stay for a fun weekend of activities and catch ups. Starting with a Bush Dance at the Glen Valley Hall on the Friday night and continuing through Saturday and Sunday with pioneer skills demonstrations, lots of fun and games, and a big roast on the Saturday night. Mittagundi Business Manager

The business manager is a newly created position reporting to the Director and Chair of Mittagundi and undertaking a range of administative tasks.

It is rare chance to be the administrative backbone supporting our professional team to deliver opportunities for young people on our classic outdoor programs.

This position is:

Part time with flexible hours. We expect the position will be for around 8 to 16 hours per week. It will be largely up to you to set the hours that you work.
Not based at Mittagundi. Can be based anywhere with good phone and fast internet.

There's been lots of snow on the ground (10cms at Mittagundi!) to mark the end of a packed set Winter programs. Thanks to all the schools and vollies for making a great Winter possible. After a quick break we're back and straight into our Spring Programs.

We're looking for an extra set of hands to help out on the first two Spring Programs for the walk in and walk out. If you have Outdoor Ed qualifications and experience we'd love to hear from you. The Hop

Every year in middle of winter a group of passionate supporters and curious onlookers gather at the rustic barn at the Collingwood Children's Farm for a night of fun and dancing.

Why? To raise funds so that Wollangarra and Mittagundi can continue providing amazing experiences for Young People in the outdoors.

Its is a great opportunity to catch up with the amazing Melbourne based Wollangarra and Mittagundi Community. Loads of bands, food stall, full bar plus delicious mulled wine.

Where: Collingwood Children's Farm, 18 St Heliers St, Abbotsford.
When: 7pm, Saturday 26th of June

Winter Volunteers for August

Winter is an especially busy time at Mittagundi. We run action packed ski programs and need extra hands on deck. It's a great opportunity for those curious to see a program in action to come up and help out. You don't need any special skills, however if you are an Outdoor Ed/ Rec student we would be especially excited to hear from you.

Program News

Its all go at Mittagundi at the moment. Back to back programs all the way up to the end of May. The May programs are nearly full, however we still have a few places left in our April programs.

Mittagundi Open Weekend January 15th to 17th

Once a year we invite the entire Mittagundi community to come and stay for a fun weekend of activities and catch ups.

After a search spanning the country we have found a new Director to lead Mittagundi from the start of 2010.

Directing Mittagundi is an exciting, challenging and at times exhausting experience and we wish Jacquie all the best for her three year journey.

It is customary at Mittagundi to employ two directors at a time and so we are on the hunt for an inspiring co-director to work with Jacqui.

If you know anyone who has a passion for leading young people through challenging programs in the beautiful Victorian bush and the skills and experience to be a valuable part of the team please send them this way!

From Wangaratta take the Oxley Flats road (initially Faithful St then Wilson Road) out of Wangaratta. Turn left onto the Snow Road (Glenrowan – Myrtleford Road) after approx. 16km. Proceed along snow road for approx 7km. Turn right into Illawong Road. After 300m veer right into Yarrabee Road. After 1.93km you will come to 3 letterboxes on your left, the first has 193 on it. There are no special boxes that you need to have ticked. Just a bit of energy and passion and the desire to 'give it a go'.

The position is for 12 months and in exchange for your awesome energy Mittagundi provides all your food and board (yes - you can eat as much as you like!), intensive training and skills development that continues for the whole year, and a little bit of cash to keep the wheels turning ($6000 per year). We know it ain't much but the experience is worth it.

Every year in middle of winter a group of passionate supporters and curious onlookers gather at the rustic barn at the Collingwood Children's Farm for a night of fun and dancing.

Why? To raise funds so that Wollangarra and Mittagundi can continue providing amazing experiences for Young People in the outdoors.

Its is a great opportunity to catch up with the amazing Melbourne based Wollangarra and Mittagundi Community.

Loads of bands, food stall, full bar plus delicious mulled wine.

Every 3 years Mittagundi seeks out 2 people to lead our organisation.

The Director(s) role is immensely challenging and rewarding and offers a truly unique lifestyle and the opportunity to facilitate life changing courses for young participants (14 to 18yo). Past directors have commented on how much the role has changed their lives and the influential experiences that they encountered during their time at Mittagundi.

The position draws on a range of skills - educational, outdoor (hiking, group leading, rafting, etc), practical (milking cows!) with the responsibility of running a small successful non-profit organisation. No single day will be the same and as a director you will find yourself doing things that you never would have expected.

Mittagundi aims to be the best personal and professional experience available for people in all areas of the organisation from the participants to the directors, staff and council. As a Director you will have access to training, resources and support to help you grow with the position.
